What is a professional organizer?

A professional organizer uses tested principles and expertise to help others organize to meet their needs. A professional organizer designs custom organizing solutions, teaches organizing skills, and provides information, products and encouragement to clients.

How long does it take to get organized?

Organization is an ongoing process. Think about it as “being organized” rather than “getting organized.” The scope of the job, how easily the client can make decisions, and at what pace the client is comfortable working determines the length of a session, and the duration of the total project.

What is the best way to get organized?

There is no best way. Everyone has a different personality type, work style, and external influences. A professional organizer is adept at creating a system that works best for the individual.

How should I prepare for my first session?

Get a good night’s sleep. Don’t feel you need to straighten up before the organizer arrives. It is important to see your home or office in its “natural state.” That way, the organizer will be able to more accurately assess the scope of the job.

Are you going to make me throw things away?

You will never be pressured to discard your possessions. A professional organizer will help you decide whether to keep or toss an object. An organizer will ask questions that will guide you to your own decision.

Do you do the work, or do you tell me how to do it?

We will work side-by-side with you, or remotely via phone, Skype or email. Whichever way we work you will learn new behaviors and habits that will allow you to become organized and stay organized. Many times, the client is given “homework” to complete before the next session.

I’m embarrassed by my mess. How confidential are our sessions?

The NAPO Code of Ethics, under which we operate, dictates a policy of strict confidentiality. We keep confidential all client information, both business and personal. We are sensitive to the fact that you are inviting us into a situation that may be causing you stress or embarrassment.

Do you work alone or with assistants?

We bring in paid assistants when the job warrants it, and only with the client’s permission. Most sessions are one-on-one.

Do you offer a free on-site consultation?

No. We try to obtain enough information over the phone before a session so that we can start right in with the job. However, we will schedule a paid one hour initial consultation to meet the client and talk about the job on site if requested.

How long does a session last?

We feel that little is accomplished in less than 3 or 4 hours. We will schedule shorter sessions with an ongoing client and assign work for the client to do on her/his own.
